While many anticipate the local and online multiplayer options that await them in Super Smash Bros., there are still an ample amount of secrets that Nintendo has been hiding about the pair of fighters. One major addition to the new games is the ability to change skins to represent retro appearances from a fighter’s past or allow access to various genders of existing avatar-based characters like Fire Emblem’s Robin or Animal Crossing’s Villager.
Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai took to MiiVerse today to further detail the alternate appearances that’ll be available in the pair of upcoming fight titles. According to the acclaimed developer, each fighter will have a total of eight different wardrobe options to choose from; that’s an accumulative total that includes both alternate costumes and colors.

While demonstrating a range of color choices for Samus shows how much detail the development team has put into giving gamers variety – as well as adding a nice boost of nostalgia – Sakurai also showcased how some characters will instead offer wholly different looks in lieu of alternate colors. To demonstrate this, he showcased how the Villager will bypass simply color alterations and will instead don an entirely new look.
“…And here she is in the color schemes of the Gravity Suit from Metroid Prime, Green Samus (a regular in the Smash series), the Light Suit, and Dark Samus. A total of eight colors.”
Fans of Super Smash Bros. aren’t strangers to having alternate costumes (Wario kicked off the trend in Brawl), but this is the first time that Nintendo has fully embraced the feature in a way that’s impacted a majority of the playable brawlers.
Most, if not all, of the roster may have been leaked, but the costumes should make for a nice surprise to those that can avoid having them spoiled. With characters still left to be officially revealed by Nintendo, it’s possible that even more combatants could score some new outfits, but only time will tell what Sakurai and his team have in store for fans.
