Final Fantasy 16’s Dominance Trailer revealed that Shiva, Garuda, Titan, Phoenix, Ramuh, Odin, Bahamut, and Ifrit will appear in the game, leaving fans to wonder if there will be more. This new installment has centered its trailers around the summoning mechanic and, though they have revealed a great deal already, several summons have likely been denied an appearance in the trailer to enhance the surprise upon the game’s full release.
10 Fat Chocobo
Chocobos are one of the most iconic creatures seen throughout the Final Fantasy series, having appeared in almost every installment of the long-running video game franchise to date. Their role in the series is to act as a means of transportation while also exhibiting traits that make them lovable pets.
The Fat Chocobo is exactly what the name suggests: a Fat Chocobo. It is a nonsensical creature when compared to the more intimidating summons seen in the series, but its ridiculous nature is part of its charm. Its appearance in Final Fantasy 16 would serve to break away from the more serious tone that the game seems to be operating under.
9 Knights Of The Round
The Knights of the Round Materia allows players to call forth a group of terrifyingly powerful warriors to aid the party in battle. It is the strongest summon present in Final Fantasy 7 but is perhaps best known for its impact on the story of Final Fantasy 15 when Noctis uses the knights’ powers to defeat Ardyn.
Being renowned for its decimating strength and medieval roots, the ability to summon the Knights of the Round would blend seamlessly into the story of Final Fantasy 16. Given how infrequently the summon has appeared over the years, one suspects the developers will look to squeeze it in somewhere.
8 Anima
Originally appearing in Final Fantasy 10, Anima is one of the more frightening summons obtainable throughout the series. Having played a big role in the story of Final Fantasy 10, many assumed that Anima would not reappear in later installments, but its inclusion in Final Fantasy 14 debunked this hypothesis.

Comprised of two separate torsos, Anima is an otherworldly beast restricted by chains. These chains are said to confine its true strength, thus further enhancing the threat that it exhibits. Anima’s inclusion in Final Fantasy 16 could allow the player to call upon the power of fear while combating their foes.
7 Zodiark
Final Fantasy 12 sees the inclusion of Zodiark, one of the most challenging enemies present in the series. Found in the deepest section of the Henne Mines, Zodiark bombards the party with a barrage of devastating attacks almost immediately after encountering them.
Upon defeating this exceptional foe, the player gains the option to summon Zodiark to assist them in future battles. Its incorporation in Final Fantasy 16 could allow for a less gargantuan god-like creature to assist Clive in combat.
6 Gilgamesh
Gilgamesh is a recurring villain seen throughout the Final Fantasy series. His primary goal in the franchise is to obtain the most powerful weaponry by any means necessary. During his quest, he will often encounter the player’s party and attempt to best them in combat to obtain their weapons.
Final Fantasy 5 marked the first instance where the player could summon this foe upon besting him in combat. His charming personality and absurd nature make him one of the most engaging characters in the series, so if he were to be callable in Final Fantasy 16, he could bring with him a sense of charm and humor.
5 Leviathan
First introduced as a non-summonable creature in Final Fantasy 2, the Leviathan is a water-based ocean dweller that went on to make a big splash in future Final Fantasy games. Upon its defeat in Final Fantasy 3, the player would gain the option to summon this living tidal wave to assist them in combat situations and it’s shown up in almost every mainline installment since then.
Leviathan’s absence from the Final Fantasy 16 trailer was a surprising one as many would argue that its popularity is far greater than some of the summons that were shown. Its impact during the events of Final Fantasy 15 made it one of the most important summons seen throughout the franchise, so perhaps developers have chosen to wait until the game’s release to finally showcase it.
4 Cúchulainn
Cúchulainn, the deranged sewer-dweller, can be found in the Garamsythe Waterway in Final Fantasy 12. Upon discovering him, the player will be forced to engage the intimidating foe in battle while this frightening blob quickly drains their health.
The name “Cúchulainn” is rooted in Irish folklore. It referred to a warrior with god-like capabilities, similar to that of Clive, the lead protagonist of Final Fantasy 16. Though it has only appeared once, its placement in Final Fantasy 16 would be a fitting one due to its mythological roots.
3 Tonberry
Though Tonberries are most commonly regarded for causing some of the most unexpected game overs in gaming, Final Fantasy 8 gave the player the ability to summon this terrifying creature. To obtain this summon, the player must defeat the Tonberry King, a monster that appears after twenty lesser Tonberries have been killed in the Cetra Ruins.
Given the scale of the summons showcased, in the Final Fantasy 16 trailer, the inclusion of the Tonberry would add a layer of diversity to the summons already present. Its visually unthreatening demeanor is a far cry from the natures of summons like Bahamut and Ifrit, making it a refreshing addition to the story.
2 Carbuncle
The Carbuncle summon refers to the recurring fox-like creature introduced in Final Fantasy 5. When summoned, the Carbuncle will aid its wielder by casting protective spells and healing them.

The summons featured in the Final Fantasy 16 trailer are all spectacular in their designs. They are portrayed as incredibly powerful beings, capable of destroying continents, but their means of defense have yet to be seen. The inclusion of Carbuncle in Final Fantasy 16 could allow the player to approach combat more strategically. In a world governed by god-like beings, Carbuncle could provide a genuine means of protection.
1 Cactuar
The Cactuar is a recurring enemy present throughout multiple installments in the Final Fantasy series. Its design is reminiscent of a cactus with eyes and limbs, but its most iconic trait lies in its abilities.
The Cactuar can fire needles at its foes, usually resulting in massive damage. Like the Tonberry, its unsuspecting appearance can trick the player into engaging with it, often leading to a game over screen if they’re not careful. It is renowned for its high damage output and frightening speed, so its utilization in Final Fantasy 16 could allow the player to turn the tables against the slower-moving summons present in the game.
Final Fantasy 16 is scheduled to release in summer 2023.
