The Summer Game Fest started amidst the confusion of Covid-19 wrecking 2020 and after Keighley broke away from E3. Big names such as Playstation and Electronic Arts, who had already pulled away from E3, attended The Summer Game Fest 2021 and will make another appearance at the 2022 event. The Game Awards, also produced by Keighley, showcases some of the best games of the year while also partnering with big names in the gaming industry to reveal upcoming games and news. Last month, the 2021 nominations for The Game Awards were announced with thirty different categories.

Last year, The Summer Game Fest featured news and revealed trailers for many games, including Elden Ring and Tiny Tina’s Wonderland. A teaser for Call of Duty: Warzone Season 4 was also released during the lineup before more information was given later. Jeff Goldblum even made an appearance and shared his world premiere announcement for Jurassic World: Evolution 2. The event continued with commentary and inside looks from indie developers and a performance by Weezer.
Unlike previous events, The Game Awards 2021 will be held in front of a live audience, leaving some to speculate if The Summer Game Fest will be the same. Next week’s free live stream event will include an impressive lineup of presenters, including Keanu Reeves, Christopher Nolan, and Giancarlo Esposito. In addition, there is a rumor that NetherRealm Studios may have a new game announced at The Game Awards.
At this time, there is little news on The Summer Game Fest 2022, though more information is likely to be announced at The Game Awards, which will live stream worldwide on December 9th. Yesterday voting opened for The Player’s Choice votes, with thirty titles to choose from.
Though many agree with the lineup at The Game Awards, it can’t please everyone. Some feel Hitman 3 deserves more recognition at The Game Awards, as it was omitted from the Game of the Year nominations. Along with Hitman 3, many fans noted that Unpacking is also absent from The Game Awards 2021 Best Indie Game nominations.
