With buzz spreading among “LOTR” diehards that this will be the one camp to rule them all, the program has already become one of the museum’s most popular offerings. Enrollment–it’s $370 if you’re not a museum member–began last week, and Ochoa suspects they may have to expand the camp beyond its 21 slots. (Add another tree to the shire?) Charles and Susan Haan, of San Francisco, signed up Mina, 10, who’s preparing for her theatrical debut by reading the book with them. (It’s not required for enrollment.) Her only concern: “There are no female characters in it.” She says she would settle, however, for playing a dwarf or a wizard.

Camp director Gina Pandiani has some advice for trilogy director Peter Jackson if he brings “The Hobbit” to the screen. “I think it would be neat to use children,” she says. If he needs an experienced cast, he’ll know where to turn.
